Makurdi town capital of Benue state North central Nigeria. It lies on the south bank (279miles (449km) south – Southwest was extended to Jos and Kaduna. Makurdi rapidly developed into a transportation and market centre in 1976 following the division of Benue and Plateau into two states Makurdi was selected the capital of Benue state.
The Benue state capital is located on the main high way network and has a military Airport, it is now a transphipment point for cattle from Nigerian northern states. From June to November when river Niger has high water makurdi serves as a port from which goods and services including locally grown sesame seeds are transported to Lokoja (126miles) (203km) west at the Niger venue confluence and to the Niger Delta ports.
The town is a local trade centre for year’s, yams, sorghum, millet, rice, cassava, sheanuts, sesame oil, peanuts (groundnuts) , soyabeans, and cotton raised by the Tiv ,Idoma and Igede . Makurdi is home to the prestigious Benue State University and the Joseph Saawuan Tarkaa University Makurdi, the makurdi metropolis is mostly dominated by the Tiv tribe, Makurdi which has its markets namely wadata , wurukum, modern market and International market respectively for consumer purchase of goods and services.
Makurdi town is made up of large number of people who engage in civil service dutiies, commercial activities and agrarian peasantry . Makurdi town is built up area with the highest concentration of people in High-level and wadata.
Activities as a source of livelihood, makurdi which is the Benue State Capital has different Government and public offices and establishment namely, NTA Makurdi, Radio Benue FM , Bioresources development centre, staff development centre Makurdi, Benue state teaching hospital, Voice of Nigeria north central zone, the Benue state council for arts and culture, Makurdi local government office of the government, the Benue state house .
